“Seminar on Construction Management at SGI”

Department of Civil Engineering organized a seminar on “Construction Management” at Samalkha Group of Institutions (SGI) for all students of Civil Engineering on 18th November 2014. The event was chaired by Dr. Rajesh Goel, Director SGI; Mr. Amit Verma (HOD CSE); Mr. Gaurav (Coordinator, Civil), Mr. Shashank (Coordinator, Civil) and other faculty members. Civil Engineering deals with design, construction & maintenance of physical and naturally built environment, including works like road, bridges, canals & buildings. It is second oldest engineering discipline after military engineering.
The guest Dr. Rishipal, Professor in Management, highly geared up the seminar with his presentation on the Construction Management by citing various examples like that of Mahatma Gandhi, Anna Hazare, Mukesh Ambani etc cetera. Construction is an art & science to form material or immaterial objects, systems or organizations and comes from Latin word constructionem (from come “together” & structure “to pile up”). It is used as a verb: the act of building & a noun: how a building was built, the nature of its structures. Management in business & organizations is a function that coordinates the efforts of people to accomplish goals and objectives using available resources efficiently & effectively. Management comprises of planning, organizing, staffing (bringing human resources to execute whatever you have planned), leadership (speaking in such a way so that people will start believing you) or directing (information, command, order to manage something) and controlling an organization to accomplish the goals. He told the students that most reliable models are available in this world are Mathematical Models. When Mathematical calculations are correct, then physical model is approved. Present day is a day of six sigma quality. In civil engineering, construction is itself a production. He also explained various sub disciplines of construction management under civil engineering like Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Earthquake Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Forensic Engineering, Aerospace Engineering etc cetera. He took an example of a man (Mr. Ambani) who was standing at petrol pump with a minimum salary having dream or vision of creating best refinery in world.
The Seminar was arranged and coordinated by energetic students Sumit and Rajan under the guidance of Mr. Gaurav (Coordinator, Civil) and Mr. Amit Verma (HOD, CSE). All the students are actively participated in FAQ session. All the faculty members of Civil Engineering Department played an important role in organizing and coordinating the event.

IS BACKWARDNESS CONSEQUENCE OF OUR POLITICAL SYSTEM OR ITS OTHER WAY ROUND?

Backwardness of our country is not totally the consequence of our political system after all we get the political environment as we are. Our leaders come from us only so to blame politician is easiest methodology we have adopted for.
After the dawn of independence the economic and growth of our country was the major issue for our country and after the globalization it was a major concern. But at that time we have not at the survival position.
If we talk about the last two decades the system of coalition government especially has initiated a new tactics of saving the government rather than reviving the country. India has enough potential to grow but its leaders have even bigger bellies than that. Our political system dilutes the accountability and parties blame each other for any mis governance. But at the same time I would like to point out that the mindset and awareness of citizens also play a significant role in any country’s growth. In India most of the people treat themselves as just a statistics on a census chart and keep blaming politician for every small issue. They must understand their importance. I believe active and justified use of the political right given to citizens can improve country’s growth.

We can’t just blame the political system. We can see the present situation of voters who have no choice to elect better among the candidates for their constituency. Certain reforms should be brought such that the candidate stood for election shouldn’t have at-least a single case filed against him and investigating agencies like CBI should be given autonomous power as against under control under government. We can see many CBI cases haven’t been solved yet due to peer political pressure under the vested interests of the leaders. So we have to wake up and strive to take up an oath to remove corruption at the root level and thus ensuring the development of the country.

THE VALUE OF DISCIPLINE

Discipline means abiding by, or adhering to, certain rules or norms of social life. Discipline is what a person imposes on himself taking it as his duty to God, to society, or to some other institution. It remands a strict control over an individual's rights and privilege, which if allowed swelling uncurbed and unregulated may result in disorder and anarchy in social and political life of a country. Discipline is vital to a successful life. Without discipline army is reduced to a disordered mob, democracy degenerates into monocracy and social life becomes chaotic and anarchical.
Nature provides the best example of discipline in life. In nature all the planets move in their orbit; the seasons change in accordance with a set order, day and night follow each other at regular intervals, Man must take lessons from Nature. Our life should be punctuated with discipline. It is in this sense that K. Santhanam defined National Integrity as the conscientious and faithful performance of duties and obligations by every section of the people.

It’s always better..!!

NOTA is a welcome step towards strengthening the democratic selection process of candidates, but it is a toothless tiger in its current form. We can say through NOTA that all of the above candidates are not good, but NOTA do not empower the people to force political class to change the candidates. In my view, political parties should be forced to change a candidate if certain percentage of voters opts for NOTA.
People can also show their dissent towards political class and system by using the NOTA option. Voters in conflict areas such as North Eastern regions, Maoist dominated areas and Indian-administered Kashmir can use NOTA to highlight their plights and miseries. Democracy has to move ahead with Right to Reject, Right to Recall. The NOTA option is a beginning.

RAT RACE TO MBA IS A RACE TO BIG MONEY

There are different kinds of wealth building strategies in order to avoid waste of time and mistakes for those out there who are planning to build their wealth. In fact, to get rich is easy for those who know the wealth making strategies to achieve financial success. Today lots of students are moving towards the field of management to get handsome salary. Based on survey and studies globally, most professionals that have MBA diploma earned double than their previous income. For example, most of the CEO of the fortune 500 companies earned MBA diploma and get richer faster than technical people do with engineering background. Thus there is a race among the students for MBA to make big money. This might be a shortcut for them to be richer and it’s not bad idea as every individual in this era wants to get name and fame by hook or by crook. People being indulged with the technical background or being fresher in terms of graduation whether at engineering or medical stream do not get advantage of having high salary because of the null year experience.
After graduation there are a lot of options before candidates to seek a job or to continue with their higher studies. After B. tech a student must opt for M. Tech as it belongs to their stream but they don’t as there is a feeling that they would either have to gain experience or have to become a faculty in future. Now the question arises that how would they sustain in the environment where they have to deal with the knowledge of finance, management and organizational behaviour? The answer is quite simple- they can just for making a BIG MONEY.
MBA not only provide handsome salary but makes you start to operate your own business. The majority of the billionaires and millionaires have their own business, yeah not only one but also more. Right after you graduate with an MBA degree from a big-name college, it would have a lot of value. Recruiters would likely give it a lot of weightage while evaluating you. Indeed, the developing world is proving a melting pot for growing collaboration between the private, voluntary and public sectors. Thus today a rat race to MBA is not meant for educational purpose but to enhance their money making.

GOVERNMENT TO DRDO

In a message to the Defense Research Development Organization that has over a dozen scientists working on tenures beyond 60, the government has frowned at the tendency of giving extensions to scientists without consulting the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC).

A government note sent on Friday to nine ministries and departments which have specialists in scientific or medical fields, including DRDO and Department of Space, the Department of Personnel and Training has said that the ACC headed by the prime minister has observed that in some cases, departments have unilaterally extended the service officers beyond the age of superannuation without obtaining the approval of ACC.
