“Seminar on Construction Management at SGI”

Department of Civil Engineering organized a seminar on “Construction Management” at Samalkha Group of Institutions (SGI) for all students of Civil Engineering on 18th November 2014. The event was chaired by Dr. Rajesh Goel, Director SGI; Mr. Amit Verma (HOD CSE); Mr. Gaurav (Coordinator, Civil), Mr. Shashank (Coordinator, Civil) and other faculty members. Civil Engineering deals with design, construction & maintenance of physical and naturally built environment, including works like road, bridges, canals & buildings. It is second oldest engineering discipline after military engineering.
The guest Dr. Rishipal, Professor in Management, highly geared up the seminar with his presentation on the Construction Management by citing various examples like that of Mahatma Gandhi, Anna Hazare, Mukesh Ambani etc cetera. Construction is an art & science to form material or immaterial objects, systems or organizations and comes from Latin word constructionem (from come “together” & structure “to pile up”). It is used as a verb: the act of building & a noun: how a building was built, the nature of its structures. Management in business & organizations is a function that coordinates the efforts of people to accomplish goals and objectives using available resources efficiently & effectively. Management comprises of planning, organizing, staffing (bringing human resources to execute whatever you have planned), leadership (speaking in such a way so that people will start believing you) or directing (information, command, order to manage something) and controlling an organization to accomplish the goals. He told the students that most reliable models are available in this world are Mathematical Models. When Mathematical calculations are correct, then physical model is approved. Present day is a day of six sigma quality. In civil engineering, construction is itself a production. He also explained various sub disciplines of construction management under civil engineering like Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Earthquake Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Forensic Engineering, Aerospace Engineering etc cetera. He took an example of a man (Mr. Ambani) who was standing at petrol pump with a minimum salary having dream or vision of creating best refinery in world.
The Seminar was arranged and coordinated by energetic students Sumit and Rajan under the guidance of Mr. Gaurav (Coordinator, Civil) and Mr. Amit Verma (HOD, CSE). All the students are actively participated in FAQ session. All the faculty members of Civil Engineering Department played an important role in organizing and coordinating the event.
